As the days have reached their peak length with the apex of sunshine upon us, it was only right to take advantage of an almost perfect night on the Lake Wobegon Trail. Continue reading

This episode of the Light Painting Vlog is a little different. Instead of a how to, it is more of a collection of videos from our adventure with Anya. I will explain how we made the final light painting in detail here in writing. Continue reading
Today I am taking you into the world of Macro (Micro) photography. Macro and Micro are the same thing in this example, just means close up photography. Not only are we getting into Macro photography, I am using light painting instead of studio lights or strobes to create a commercial looking image. Continue reading
A handful of years ago, I was a student at Iowa State University. I had just started playing with a camera and was inspired by a show on the Weather Channel where a fine art photographer named Peter Lik made landscape photography look like fun. One morning I grabbed a tripod and my camera, got up before sunrise on a chilly morning, and headed to a small pond a few miles north of campus. The weather was terrible! The wind was howling, the light was beginning to show but I could see a thick layer of clouds above me. I grabbed my gear and hiked down to the beach, while fighting the cold wind with nothing but a light sweatshirt. Continue reading
The beauty of light painting photography is the challenge it poses. The digital age has definitely removed much of the challenge from producing a great image, although it has opened up a lot of creative outlets that weren’t there before. Continue reading

I brought a bobber with me to really add some bright color to an otherwise blue scene. Immediately I could see an improvement from yesterday’s photo shoot. The flashlight was was working great, and I could pull of long exposures with no problem. Continue reading
I had grand plans for this photograph, but plans and reality are often separate. Even with that said, this image served as a learning experience. As the days are growing longer with spring on it’s way here in Minnesota, it is getting more challenging to wake up early enough to make it to my locations before the light floods the scene. Continue reading
How can I create a literal “light painting”? Wait, I know, I’ll use a paint brush and paint it with light! So after I came up with that brilliant groundbreaking idea ;), it was time to make it happen. Continue reading
In episode #2 of the Light Painting Vlog, I take what we learned from episode #1 and apply it to create a conceptual photograph.
Using the spoon once again and a mug, I tried to create an image that mimicked steam pouring out of a mug/bowl, except that steam was made of light. Continue reading
